After a long period of home isolation and online learning, Yinghua has successfully returned to school, and teachers and students have returned to campus safely. To help children grow better, Zhuhai Yinghua Cambridge International School invited Ms. Wan Xiaoli, a deputy to the Zhuhai People's Congress and president of the Zhuhai Xiangzhou District Psychological Association, to give a special lecture on mental health to all teachers and students on June 5, with the theme of "Protecting the Heart, Guarding Every Day of Growth."
Parents should learn to communicate with their children equally, using positive language to encourage and warm them, allowing children to gain the strength to grow and feel the harmonious atmosphere of the family.
More understanding, less blame.
Why are children unwilling to communicate with their parents, remaining silent? Why are children addicted to mobile games and unwilling to study?
The months-long home learning environment, causing isolation from the world and a lack of face-to-face communication with peers, has caused children to experience some psychological stress responses: emotional distress such as depression and irritability; behavioral problems such as addiction to mobile games and unwillingness to study; and a decline in interpersonal communication skills and desire.
In response to this, parents should maintain a calm attitude, avoid getting angry with their children, and fully understand the causes of their children's negative emotions and behaviors. Parental emotional stability is an internal and external influence that gives children a sense of security.
Avoid learned helplessness.
"Learned helplessness" refers to a state of behavior and psychology formed through learning, characterized by hopelessness and helplessness towards reality.
Ms. Wan Xiaoli further explained: "If parents say she is bad, she will think she is bad; if parents say he is stupid, he will think he is stupid. When parents equate a child's specific behavior with the child himself, the child will link his value to his performance."
"Hoping for a son to become a dragon, a daughter to become a phoenix" is a typical expectation of Chinese parents for their children's future. Therefore, many Chinese parents, under the background of "examination-oriented education," unconsciously place unreasonable expectations on their children and engage in blind comparisons, neglecting the children's physiological differences and psychological needs.
There is no such thing as a "stupid child" in the world. Every child is unique and excellent, and every child can exhibit diverse cognitive styles. Parents should correctly understand and accept the innate differences of their children , encourage more, criticize less, affirm more, and punish less.

The famous philosopher Jaspers wrote in his "What is Education?": "The essence of education means: one tree shakes another tree, one cloud pushes another cloud, one soul awakens another soul."
Every child needs to be "seen."
A parent once "complained" to our teacher: When the child was in public school, communication between the parent and teacher was minimal. Occasionally, the teacher would say that the child hadn't done their homework properly, but more detailed information was unavailable. With so many students in a class, the time allocated for home-school communication for each parent is too short, and the parent felt embarrassed to ask too many questions.
In most compulsory education schools, for a teacher managing a large class of nearly 50 students, giving each student equal attention is simply overwhelming.
However, this is unfair to the child and extremely irresponsible for the child's personal growth. For a child, being "seen" by the teacher means being acknowledged as an existing person, an independent person, and a person in the process of growth.
Psychology says: Seeing is healing. A wise teacher will "see" with a sense of responsibility, viewing each student as an independent individual in the process of growth, who should be treated with kindness.
Differences and individuality
Regardless of grades, there is no distinction between excellent and poor students. Because teachers know that students are like seeds, each with a different flowering period; some flowers bloom brilliantly from the start, while others require a long wait and careful cultivation.
Compared to the teaching methods of ordinary schools, international schools place more emphasis on a balanced approach to cultivating students' academic abilities and skills, based on children's interests and intellectual characteristics, to discover their strengths, educate them according to their aptitude, and fully develop their talents. 。
During the lecture, Ms. Wan Xiaoli visited our school's STEAM classroom and expressed her approval of the curriculum model that cultivates children's talents and curiosity.
Life is a lonely journey. We cannot always receive help from others. Only by building a beautiful spiritual world within ourselves can we still have the courage to overcome obstacles when we encounter difficulties.
Be the master of your emotions.
Negative emotions are a sharp knife that can hurt oneself and others. Many absurd and even foolish behaviors are caused by the influence of negative emotions. Therefore, being the master of one's emotions is a required course in every child's life. 。
In order to help children understand emotional management more intuitively, Ms. Wan Xiaoli gave a common example—nicknames. Ms. Wan Xiaoli asked the children to think of a happy reason for being given a nickname, and they eagerly responded:
"I'm glad I was given a nickname because it sounds nice!"
"I'm glad I was given a nickname because it's a term of endearment!"
"I'm glad I was given a nickname because I'm getting attention!"
Every child dislikes being given nicknames by others, and may even develop negative feelings such as depression and inferiority because of nicknames. Children should learn to look at things from a different perspective and escape from negative emotions.
Learn to be the master of your emotions, and look at everything with a happy attitude , and you will find that the clouds of "bad luck" will gradually dissipate, and everything will develop in a better direction.
Happiness is an ability
In this lecture, Ms. Wan Xiaoli also shared a video: Male A is troubled because he is handsome, rich, and often pursued by girls, while this trouble makes Male B so envious that he vomits blood. This video made the teachers and students present laugh, and the atmosphere was very relaxed.
Both protagonists in the video believe that they are unhappy, because ultimately, they have not reconciled with themselves, always caring about what they don't have, but ignoring what they do have.
And the ability to be happy is actually the ability to reconcile with oneself If we all understand happiness as the smooth sailing of life, such happiness is difficult to maintain, because life is always full of ups and downs, and things don't always go our way. 。 Only by calmly accepting various setbacks and failures in life and reconciling with our unsatisfactory selves can we achieve true happiness.

Only inner reconciliation can lead to outer harmony. Everything we have learned in our lives is only for the purpose of reconciling with ourselves; we go through so much, only to cultivate a peaceful heart. I believe that through this lecture, the children will better understand this truth.
In the future, Yinghua will work with Ms. Wan Xiaoli, to create Yinghua's characteristic psychology classroom and establish a professional psychology workshop , jointly doing a good job in mental health education, carefully protecting the children, and helping every child to grow up healthily with a more positive attitude.
