Model United Nations activities originated in the United States and are a long-standing and widespread student activity.
As early as 1923, before the establishment of the United Nations, a group of American students showed a keen interest in international organizations and international politics. They were active on the campuses of Harvard University and other universities, holding cross-school simulations of the League of Nations—Model League of Nations conferences. They simulated diplomats from different countries and discussed international issues based on the League of Nations' procedures. Model United Nations activities are a continuation of these simulation conferences. The establishment of the United Nations in 1945 aroused widespread enthusiasm among people worldwide. In 1951, the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley) took the lead in establishing a Model United Nations team and began Model United Nations activities.
Model United Nations activities are held in middle schools and universities across the United States. Since 2001, Model United Nations has entered China and developed rapidly, becoming a popular activity in many universities and high schools.
As early as 1993, the Beijing Shunyi International School held the first Beijing Model United Nations Conference (BEIMUN), but its main participants were international schools from various countries and within China. It was independent of the domestic education sector, and therefore no Chinese students participated. The first Model United Nations conference in Chinese universities in the true sense was held at the Diplomatic Academy in 1995, and the first Model United Nations conference for high school students was the Peking University National Model United Nations Conference in 2005.
On October 6-7, 2017, students from our school's G1 and G2 grades participated in the 2017 Guangdong Model United Nations Conference English Group Finals, divided into four teams. They discussed the issue of nuclear proliferation in South Asia and the issue of ISIS terrorists.
At the beginning of the conference, each country and NGO voted on the two topics, and finally selected the issue of nuclear proliferation in South Asia for discussion first;
Representatives from various countries (NGOs) expressed their opinions on the conference topics.
Representatives from various countries (NGOs) debated and formed national organizations (BLOCs), and proposed their own draft resolutions for solving problems based on BLOCs;
Countries and NGOs voted on the draft resolutions.
Finally, the issue of ISIS terrorists was discussed at the conference. Due to time constraints, no resolution was reached, but representatives from various countries and NGOs exchanged their views and opinions enthusiastically, and students from our school also gave speeches;
At the end of the Model UN competition, four delegations from our school participated, and two won awards: first prize for the best position paper and second prize.
Our school's participation in the Model United Nations competition has received strong feedback from students and parents. Students found their shortcomings in the Model UN, which enhanced their motivation for proactive learning; at the same time, they found their strengths, making them more confident in their future studies; parents said that this activity benefited students greatly, and they are very grateful to Zhuhai Yinghua Cambridge International School for providing such a platform for students. Our school will continue to participate in similar competitions to enhance students' qualities and enrich their resumes.
On the afternoon of November 20th, Zhuhai Yinghua Cambridge International School invited Ms. Wan Xiaoli, a deputy to the Zhuhai People's Congress and president of the Zhuhai Xiangzhou District Psychological Association, to give a special lecture to the students on the topic of "How to Be the Master of Your Emotions".
