How can you balance major exams and applications during the application season?

My time management secret is...

"October will bring four major exams in chemistry and physics, all while students also need to complete their personal statement writing and prepare for university applications..." This tightly packed schedule, already set before the semester even began, has left many students feeling overwhelmed. How can students strike a balance between their demanding academic workload and the college application process? Today, we’re thrilled to welcome an outstanding student who’ll share her insights on time management and effective study strategies.

01 Plan wisely, prepare efficiently

“I believe the most crucial thing is to allocate time evenly, dedicating specific time slots to each task—never letting your focus on the major exam overshadow your college application efforts,” she emphasized. “Creating a detailed schedule is essential, clearly outlining what tasks need to be accomplished during each designated period.”

To support students in their exam preparation, the school has specially provided Weekend Extracurricular Classes “We can come to school on weekends for one-on-one tutoring with our teacher, which will be very helpful in improving my academic performance.”

02 Manage stress with balance and flexibility

Facing academic pressure, she openly admitted: "The main source of stress comes from the possibility of not achieving the grades I want." Her strategy to cope with this is to give her all during study hours and take it easy during her other free time.

“We can go out and have fun, or listen to English songs—this not only helps us relax but also improves our English skills.” She specifically pointed out, “We shouldn’t spend all our time studying; doing so could lead to burnout and trigger both physical and mental health issues.”

03 Enhance Academic English to Prepare for Overseas Studies

To strengthen her academic English skills, she shared several effective methods: "Our school is equipped with numerous native English-speaking teachers—English classes aren’t the only ones they teach; subjects like chemistry are also delivered by foreign instructors. This is a fantastic opportunity to improve your English!"

Additionally, she also improves her speaking skills by listening to English songs and watching American and British TV series. "This helps her grasp how native speakers express themselves, preventing her from sounding too formal and ensuring others can easily understand her."

04 Short-Term Strategies for Strengthening Weak Subjects

For chemistry, a subject she finds relatively weak, she has developed a targeted improvement plan: "I'll spend more time on chemistry—previewing the material the teacher will cover before class and reviewing the day's lessons afterward."

She particularly emphasized the importance of addressing issues promptly: "If there's any knowledge point I don't understand, I immediately reach out to my teacher for help—never leaving the problem for next time. Otherwise, the issues will just keep piling up."

She also established an error-notebook system: "After taking the chemistry exam, I’ll set aside a dedicated notebook to jot down all my mistakes. That way, when it’s time to review, I can focus specifically on reinforcing my understanding of those tricky questions."

Through this interview, we gained insight into the exceptional planning and execution skills of an outstanding student when juggling multiple tasks. Effective time management, timely problem-solving, balanced relaxation and adjustment, and smart utilization of school resources—these were all key factors that enabled her to successfully tackle both major exams and college applications simultaneously.

We hope these shared experiences will provide valuable insights for students who are also navigating the busy application season, helping them discover their own ideal learning pace and methods.

Although the application season is busy, with proper planning and strategies, anything is possible. Wishing every student a successful outcome—ideal grades and offers!
